After selling over 500,000 copies of their first book – The Hummingbird Bakery Cook Book, Tarek Malouf is back with another promising runaway success.
I received this book as a requested birthday present this spring and couldn’t wait to get into the kitchen and try some new recipes. What I found disappointingly was some of the same recipes but with modifications. For example, the vanilla cupcake recipe has been doubled in weights to make 12-16 cupcakes. (Maybe they realise that their recipes from the first book are a little flawed as I never got 12 good size cupcakes anyway, but surely with this double size recipe I will now get 20 or so, not 12-16???). In fact, most of their cupcake recipes are the same with the only variation being the flavour.
All of the recipes are set out nice and simply and the photographs are wonderful. This is something they have delivered well again. I like that you can see what you’re supposed to end up with as a finished product (pity I can’t taste the book)! I do have an issue with the layout and would have much preferred it if it was split into ‘cupcakes’, ‘whoopie pies’, ‘cookies’, etc, but I can live with it.
I haven’t been as inspired to bake much out of this book as I was with the first book and if I was buying any of the Hummingbird books as a gift I would buy the first one without a doubt.
Oh, if you want to make the whoopie pies and are wondering where on Earth you can get ‘marshmallow fluff’ in the UK then try TK Maxx or Home Sense who usually have some weird American food stuffs. You can buy small tubs of ‘fluff’ for £1.99 last time I looked!
